Quiotepec
In the north part of Oaxaca State, there is a geographic, space a narrow corridor between Mazatecan and Mixteca-Chocholtecan mountain ranges, where the natural beauty landscape doesn’t let you realize that you are descending to the 1600 mts. – 5250 ft., from the cold pine forest until the 500 mts.- 1640 ft. above sea level. This region integrates the main part of the so called Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Biosphere Reserve, lad of endemic flora and fauna with notorious abundance of cacti like the cardons called candelabras (Panchycereus weberi) and the beautiful bird green macaw (Ara militaris).
Seven rivers nourish the main river, named Papaloapan or Río Grande, moisten and give life to this land; rivers Tomellin, Apoala, Sabino y Salado on the west side; on the east side Las Vueltas river and two others that descends abruptly from the mountains where ones was the Papaloticpac lordship, El Chiquito y El Cacahuatal. On the low side of the latter, lot of conflicts took place since the Cuiteco Great Lord Tiñaña ruled Cuicatlan and the Mazatecan (Ha Shuta Enima) Great Lord Tico ruled Quiutepec, both wanted to control their bordering land. In 1676 Rosalia de Monjaras was the lordland and was named Quiutepec´s great chief and built her residence in Cacahuatal Ranch.
Recently declared UNESCO World Heritage List, locked upin the Tehuacan-Cuicatlan desert, this majestic canyon lies with a 250 mts. 850 ft. depth, where in its walls nest and is home of the green macaws (Ara Militaris) an endangered species.
Day 1 Tehuacan El Viejo – Green Wings Canyon.
Leaving time 6 a.m. from Mexico City to Sabino Oaxaca Canyon first visiting Val´Quirico Puebla for a one hour breakfast, keep going toward Tehuacan El Viejo, Puebla Ngiwan archaeological site visiting this important historical area with its museum for two hours. Next stop Green Wings Canyon starting hiking to the landscape view spot around 3:30 pm. and finish the route at 7:00 pm. to finally diner and have a good rest in our cabins.
Day 2 Quiotepec.
After breakfast let go straight up to the train station where we start our hiking to the archaeological site following part of the train tracks passing through impressive cliffs with river views, and soddenly a desert with cacti like cardons called candelabras (Panchycereus weberi) just to get to the Zapotec archaeological site of Quiutepec place where corn started to be domesticated. Distance 9 km – 5.5 mls. Lunch and 6 hours drive back to Mexico City.
